Rating: It is a solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)
Quick Summary
In Maggie Sparks and the Truth Dragon we are introduced to a spunky little witch. When Maggie Sparks’ cousin told a lie that got her in trouble, she decided that truth was overrated.
Now Maggie lies, and the more lies she tells, the more problems she creates. Worst of all, she is losing her best friend, Arthur, over it.
All is not lost, though. Maggie is a super powerful witch. Surely, some magic can put things right again.
First Impressions
I read Maggie Sparks and the Truth Dragon with my son.
From the first page, I fell in love with Maggie Sparks. Sassie and imaginative, she put together an outfit only the young or eccentric would love, and Maggie loved it.
The author caught the essence of a prepubescent child to the T. He did not miss a beat with the snobby, spiteful ones either.
In spite of the fact that this is a children’s book, it is easily a page Turner for me. By the end of the first chapter I couldn’t put it down.
What I Loved
I loved the way Steve Smallman captured the essence of all of the characters. They are definitely relateable and life like.
I especially liked the message.
What Could Have Been Better
Nothing! It was perfect.
Favourite Character
Maggie Sparks was undoubtedly my favourite character. Her energy and indomitable fighting spirit endeared her to me from the first few lines.
Memorable Quote
“Telling the truth is overrated.” The story hangs on this simple idea. Ella like most children has had to learn that just because you are telling the truth does not mean you will be believed.
Unfortunately this hurts and can sometimes push children to tell lies instead. It also breaks their trust in us.
Who Should Read This
This is a book for all ages. Inspite of the fact that this book is written for kids, there is a lesson for both adults and children here. Additionally the way the book is written makes it an easy, fast pace read.
Final thought
I recommend Maggie Sparks and the Truth Dragon for children everywhere. It is a great read for a rainy day when you are stuck indoors. If this sounds like a fun read you should also check out Maggie Sparks and the School of Slime.
