Lore of the Deep

By Claire Cock-Starkey

Folklore | Children’s Fiction

Quick Summary

This book, Lore of the Deep, shares many interesting stories about the world. For instance, have you ever wondered how the oceans got their names? Children typically ask this sort of whimsical question, and this book provides many interesting answers to similar questions that I believe the typical child will find interesting.

Full Disclosure

Since this is a children’s book, I read it with my son, so this review is based on his feedback.

First Impressions

We loved the very first story, The Poem From The Sea. It carried a great message that was easily understood. Jordan loved the first story and couldn’t wait to read more.

He also enjoyed the anecdotes in between stories. Although he questioned whether several could be true. He thought some were unlikely.

What I loved

I loved the fact that my son could not get enough of these stories every evening. He always asked for more than one.

Finding books that engage boys is much more difficult. Many are curious about nature, worms, and the like. This book carries stories that are likely to engage boys and girls while answering the 101 questions they tend to have about the world around them.

What Could Have Been Better

From my son’s reaction, I’d say this book was well-written. We love folklore and those simply added fun to the book.

Who should read this

Considering the diversity of the topics and the fact that many centered around nature and folklore I believe this book is suitable for children under 12 who love to ask questions about the world around them.

If you have a child who asks questions like these:

  1. “Mom, how far away is the moon?”
  2. “What do fishes eat?”
  3. “Is the Red Sea really red?”
  4. “Why do they call it the Red Sea?”

This book is likely to appeal to them.

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed reading this book with my son. It is different from the type of book I would typically buy him but he is a curious child and enjoyed reading it.

I learned a few things as much as he did. I definitely recommend it.
