Donna Grant
Paranormal Romance
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Quick Summary
The Bastard King is a paranormal romance in which we encounter Derick, who is feared by most and desired by women far and near.
Many fear him because he often leaves a disaster in his wake. He is strong and deadly, with a single driving force. He will let no one stop him from achieving his purpose.
Then he meets the mysterious Cora, who is alone in this world and afraid. She lost everything in the disaster that shaped her life, and now the faith of the world rests with her.
One look at Cora and Derick finds himself doing things he had never done before.
First Impressions
I was caught by the Bastard King from the very first chapter. It started off with a bang and got right to the heart of the story.
The main character is alone and afraid. In spite of her fears, she has decided to face her enemy.
In the first few chapters, there are many moments when Cora, our protagonist, displays bravery and strength, and there are implications that she is more than meets the eye.
Her purity of heart and kindness garnered her a friend in one who should have been her enemy.
All this laid the groundwork for an intriguing read. I knew there would be many surprises ahead.
What I Loved About Bastard King
I Loved the secrets that are at the very heart of the story. It was riddled with them.
The secrets the main characters kept meant that they should be mortal enemies. Unfortunately, keeping those secrets caused them to find allies in each other, which inevitably changed the outcome of the story.
The strength of the female protagonist also endeared her to me. I especially liked the way she fought her fear to follow what she saw as her destiny.
This really made me root for her.
What Could Have Been Better
Donna Grant got this one right all the way. I would not change one line.
The plot and pacing were excellent. The characters were strong and worthy adversaries, and the world-building was excellent.
Favorite Character
Derick and Cora stood out for me. I like the fact that Cora is determined to fight for the innocent and that which is pure.
I also admired the factor that Derick’s character remains the same in spite of all that was done with a goal to change him. It says much about the heart of the man.
Memorable Quote
“It was too late for should haves.”
Who Should Read This
This book is ideal for fans of fast-paced, suspenseful paranormal romance. If you loved Sinner’s Salvation, you will love The Bastard King, too.
Final Thoughts
I love The Bastard King. It is perfection, and since the ending is a cliffhanger, I will read book 2.
Overall, this is a must-read for anyone who loves a suspenseful story with a handsome, strong male lead and a female protagonist who stays strong and brave in spite of her fear—although she believes the odds are stacked against her.
The Bastard King kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish!
