Synopsis

Children meet Hariette the hornet who thought that zzinging a very fun thing to do. She spends all her time zzinging instead of puzzing.

In Harriet the Hornet, Vance Huxley has created an interesting children’s story however because of the choice of replacing “S” with “Z” throughout the book, it was difficult to both read and understand.

My twelve year old said he doesn’t even know what it was about. While the six-year-old thought he enjoyed hearing the “Z” sound throughout.

As an adult, I found it difficult to both read and understand. It wasn’t until I read it through for the second time putting in the correct letters in the words that I fully understood the story.

I actually think the deliberate misspelling of most of the words in the book could confuse early readers who are now learning to spell.

What I Like

We liked the fact that this story is about being different and embracing those differences. My six year old loved the illustrations.

What I Didn’t Like

My children found the language difficult to understand due to the overuse of the z sound.
