Free Books to read Online for Children

by CandyPosted on August 8, 2020August 21, 2020

As parents we all want our children to read more, however books could sometimes prove to be pretty expensive. When you are on a tight budget, finding interesting free books to read online for Children becomes very important.

Over time, among the list of books here on this platform, you will find many free books to read online for children.

There are also some apps that specially offer kindergarten books. I will add these here.

Why read online

  1. Reduce Cost: Owning paper books usually comes with a cost, however with growing internet use many sites have sprung up to offer eBooks to read cheaply or even for free. Obviously, because eBooks don’t need to be printed production cost is reduced.
  2. We can carry more books: Reading online means that we can have several books in our possession without the extra weight of paper books.
  3. Save the trees: With the growing threat of the greenhouse effect, it is imperative to the future of the human race, that we reduce the number of trees being cut down daily. Paper books come from trees, therefore when we read eBooks we reduce the need to destroy precious forest cover.
  4. With the widespread use of technology, more children are becoming attached to digital devices. Teaching children to use their smartphones and tablets as a reader, combine their love for technology with parents’ desire to promote good reading habits.

How to Read Online for Free

Finding online books to read for free is quite easy, my children and I do this every day. In fact, at the time of writing this, every book reviewed on this platform is available for free.

So to answer the question of how to find online books to read for free? It’s very is simple.

  • Amazon Kindle – While this platform typically offers books for sale there are always a number of books temporarily available for free, all it takes is time to look. As part of their marketing strategy, many authors temporarily offer their books on this platform for free in order to spark interest. The difficulty however maybe finding them in your particular genre.

There are usually several free books to read online for children, on this platform.

  • Wattpad – Most of the books available on Wattpad are by new authors and yes they are available for free. Of those sites in this review, Wattpad seems to be among the ones with the widest range of free books to read online for children. Also, books on this platform are increasing daily.

Please note that the books on Wattpad often have many grammatical errors because authors write directly on the platform and their books are at different stages of development. As can be expected if a book is there long enough it will eventually be edited.

  • Rakuten Kobo Books – Like Amazon Kindle, Rakuten Kobo always have some books available for free. While I have found children’s books on the site, how often they are available for free is any one’s guess. I have only been on this site for a week and have not seen any free books to read online for children. I will keep you posted on this.
  • English Kids Stories – is an app that I have been using for a few months to read with my younger child. He loves the stores and so do I. I particularly love them, not only because they are available for free, enlarge his vocabulary, and helps to develop his imagination but the stories usually have a moral in them. This app runs on an android phone and has an abundance of free books to read online for children.
  • Monkey Pen –is another site that provides free books to read online for children. According to a statement available on the Monkey Pen website, the vision is to, “provide children with access to quality books that entertain and educate. While entertaining the children, the books will also instill them with values and skills that traditional schools do not teach. I.e Money management, relationship building, investment in health, self-mastery: these are some issues of critical importance that the books will illuminate for the young readers. The purpose is to catalyze a process, which will transform the children of today into kind and conscious global citizens of tomorrow.” I believe this is a vision all parents can buy into.

    Hi

So many different apps available to engage the young seeking mind. I think it is great that these target children at different reading abilities, so that a child can learn at their own pace. It will help the child to develop their own preferences  and what genre they like. With children becoming technically savvy  at a young age, it does make sense to have these apps and to have them for free is such a great bonus.  One of the  biggest problem is technology  is not 100%  totally reliable and so what do you do when the app is not working satisfactorily?

Thank you for a great read.

There is always that downside, right? But like you said there are a lot of apps and therefore we move on to one that works better.

    Hi Candy,

Such a lovely article for kids’ books. I was just looking to download some kid books and found your site. I will surely visit these sites and give it a go. I hope I don’t have to purchase an Amazon Kindle for this though.

Reading is one of the most important hobbies for kids to pick up at an early age. It is not untrue that more a person reads, the more is his value in the world today. The reading habit is almost essential to success.

Hi Aparna, thanks for the comment. No you do not need to buy a Kindle to read on Amazon. All you need is the Amazon Kindle App which is free to download.

Hello there, there have been a really huge interest in my kids to read books lately, and I really like such zeal because it helps them grow rather than being all with the games all day it doesn’t really ait well with me. I have really love the books you have suggested here and frankly there is so much I would love to read from the books you have listed here. Cheers

Hi Candy, I find this article particularly useful in these times where reading is not outwardly encouraged. A more audio – visual approach has been taken in terms of children’s education but being a bookworm myself, I still instigate the usefulness of helpful books that will be able to teach values to children. It’s also helpful that these sites have streamlined their effectiveness to ensure easy usage. Thank you for sharing this.

Thank you for sharing this information, now I know about more platforms other than Amazon Kindle where I can go to for children’s books. Can I share that I wouldn’t be able to read or write at my level had my parents not ingrained a reading culture within me and my siblings from the time we were children. I didn’t know there are some books offered for free on Kindle. I like your point number 4 where you talk about the need to have more children friendly material for them to read on their devices. Nowadays there is so much that can indeed take up our kid’s time unnecessarily in terms of technology. There is no choice but to adopt a “substitution” approach in this case good reads are a wonderful way for them to utilise their gadgets well.

It’s been confirmed that the more you read, the more you know, it’s very important for people to take time to read books most especially the children, it improves brain function and it helps to aid retention. Thanks for sharing this, as a parent, it’ll help me get books for my daughters online for free.

Wow, thanks Candy for this informative post! Our daughter is 3 years old and is already reading on her own. I like your suggestion regarding Monkey Pen. It sounds like a very cool app. Are there a lot of adds on the app, at least to the point that it would detract from the experience? Thanks!

       Hi Shahid,

Monkey pen is a website actually. I didn’t notice any adds on the site. The books are downloadable in PDF so your child won’t have to actually be on the site to read.

      Happy reading,

This is super helpful. I’m a grandma and looking for things to get for my grandchildren to help keep them engaged and entertained from afar. Do you find kids like reading on a tablet or computer? I have a Kindle and I love it. Do your kids like using a Kindle? Thanks for providing these great resources.

      Hi Paula.

Thanks for dropping by and for your comment. My children use kindle because is easier to get comfortable with a Kindle than the computer. You generally need to sit up to enjoy reading on a computer.

      Do come again.

      Cheers,

    Hi!

Thank you for your recommendations. I was looking for the best apps and places to read books for my self and my baby sister and found this. I really love how you said reading books online saves trees, and I’ve never really thought about that myself. There are a lot of benefits in reading online and as the pandemic is here and libraries are closed, these were really nice alternatives. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this blog post! I had never heard of Wattpad until now! Also Monkey Pens sounds like a really good site for books for kids!  I love that the books on this site focus on things kids need to learn to live! Money management! They don’t teach this in school! I will have to check out the website for sure!
